a thing I thought: on food and art.

I love food. You’ll learn that as we get to know each other a little better. I love cooking it, I love eating it, but I also love looking at it.

Food in art has kind of been a thing forever. I mean still life paintings? There's food. And it's in art. And it's toooootally super old.

But I think recently, the relationship between food and art has become a little more diverse than some scarily realistic fruit on a canvas. I feel like everywhere I turn there's another example of food and art hanging out and producing something pretty cool. Here are some of my favourites...

The controversial

Food is becoming political, and wherever there is controversy, art can’t be too far away! Alexis Rockman proves that with his wordless comments about genetically modified foods.

The thoughtful

Uli Westphal says some pretty interesting stuff about how we judge our produce aesthetically. Don’t worry lemon, I think you’re beautiful just the way you are.

The nice-to-look-at

These works created by Sakir Gökçebag (yeah, I have no idea how to pronounce that either.) are right up my alley. The geometric patterns and shapes are really awesome in themselves, but they’re made that much cooler by the fact that they are constructed using little ol’ fruit and veg!

The wild and wonderful

Heston Blumenthal is totally my idol. His little gastronomical performances are mesmerising– the things I would do to get invited to one of his craaaazy dinner parties!

The totally hilarious

Have you seen butter? Rotten Tomatoes rated it pretty abysmally, but I’m pretty easy to please when it comes to movies, so with the ridiculous premise and fantastic cast, I was sold on this one before I’d even seen it!

Also, who knew butter sculpture was a real thing!

I love that food is being appreciated and explored as a little more than fuel and nutrients (those things are so unimportant, amiright?). who says you shouldn't play with your food
